France releases Mecili murder suspect
Mohamed Ziane Hasseni, an Algerian diplomat, has been released by the French justice system. He was arrested last August as a suspect in investigations into the murder of Ali Mecili, an exiled dissident gunned down in 1987 in Paris — in all probability, by agents of the Algerian government. Algeria had protested the arrest strongly and publicly, causing something of a strain on bilateral relations. The investigation continues, but Hasseni can — and presumably will — leave the country.
