France & the eastern Sahel
This is a couple of thousand kilometers off topic, but after we started dabbling in Nigerien affairs, I cannot seem to prevent our eastwards drift. French researcher Roland Marchal has written a three-piece analysis of France’s policy towards local rivals Chad and Sudan. With French influence being what it is in the western Sahel as well, it should be a valuable read even for those of us who stubbornly refuse to take any interest in Darfur, Sudan or Chad.
They’re all posted on Alex de Waal’s Making Sense of Darfur site, which, I may note in passing, is the smartest Sudan blog you’re likely to find anywhere on the web.
