France & the eastern Sahel

This is a couple of thousand kilometers off topic, but after we started dabbling in Nigerien affairs, I cannot seem to prevent our eastwards drift. French researcher Roland Marchal has written a three-piece analysis of France’s policy towards local rivals Chad and Sudan. With French influence being what it is in the western Sahel as well, it should be a valuable read even for those of us who stubbornly refuse to take any interest in Darfur, Sudan or Chad.
