All these Abdelazizes

October 8, 2009

So,

Hany Abdel-Aziz of Egypt, who has 25 years of experience with the world body, will become the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Western Sahara and the head of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (known as MINURSO).

Mr. Ban said he has informed the Security Council of his plan to appoint Mr. Abdel-Aziz, who will succeed Julian Harston, now serving as Director of the UN Office in Belgrade, Serbia.

You’re not helping, Mr. Ban. Now we have three Mr. Abdelazizes to keep track of in Western Sahara affairs, the other two being:

  • Mohammed Abdelaziz, leader of the POLISARIO.
  • Mohammed Ould Abdelaziz, president of Mauritania.

And then there’s Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Abdelaziz Belkhadem (occasionally), and so on. Small wonder people find the conflict confusing.

Too many abdelazizes indeed. Hope the most recent one is a good one this time, whatever route he is taking, to bring peace.

@Tidnit: The head of Minurso does not bring peace. He only administrates Minurso which maintains the stalemate and ceasefire. Alas, Abdel-Aziz of Egypt will not bring anything besides maybe cheaper coffee to the Minurso canteen.
